I hope you are childlike, full of awe, still a little naïve and see your mistakes for learning. I also hope you are not too childish, wanting to be the center of the universe, feeling entitled or dependent and punishing those who won't let you have your way.
When I am coloring and listening to children during counseling, I am filled with awe at how loving and resilient they are, and I feel like a kid again.
When I am watching a troubled teen cry, I wish they could feel like innocent children again.
Having children gives parents a sacred responsibility. My parents did a great job raising their children but, sadly, many parents do not. I had a client who was raised in poverty and abuse by parents too caught up in their own addictions to nurture and protect their kids, who were neglected and assaulted in ways the rest of us would never want to know.
I have a heart for helping such children, even those who are now adults; I want the chance to discover who they could've become as adults if they'd have had a chance as children.
Another of my specialties is working with children who have Attention Deficit Disorder. This is a controversial diagnosis any more. For me, it is more personal. One of my sons was going to be expelled from middle school. I took him to his pediatrician and he started on a prescription. I started learning everything I could about the neurological disorder. The medication certainly helped him academically and behaviorally but what it did for him socially (to finally have friends like his sister and brother) and for his self-esteem (to feel good about himself and his achievements) were other important benefits.
These materials are to help parents help their children, or to help adults who did not enjoy their childhood like I did.
